What makes for a good culture in professional services firms?

In professional services firms, knowledge and technical expertise is often considered a given. In my view, two things set firms apart: great client relationships, and a really positive organisational culture. I often say that I’m sure that there are other firms with a culture like ours, I just haven’t worked for any of them. In addition to enhancing productivity and the quality of service we provide, our culture is essential to attracting and retaining great people.

Returning back from holiday in a pensive mood, I’ve been reflecting on our culture recently, and I think there are (at least) 3 things that drive it:

  1. Liking each other and wanting to work together

A harmonious work environment fosters collaboration and camaraderie. Our partners and staff genuinely like and respect each other, and are therefore more motivated to work together effectively. This rapport enhances teamwork and improves problem-solving processes. Our people feel empowered and are inclined to share knowledge and support one another. They are not afraid to own their mistakes and learn from them.

  2. A fundamental sense of decency

Decency towards everyone we work with, including all our people, clients and business partners, is at our core. Mutual respect and focus on decency have built trust and strengthened our professional relationships. We do our best to ensure that everyone in our professional world is treated with integrity. A culture of decency means that all our people are heard and valued, which in turn promotes our inclusive and supportive environment. We think it enhances our firm’s reputation and is contributing to our long-term success.

  3. We want to do great work

Our firm’s culture prioritises getting, and producing, consistently high-quality work. Our people are driven by a genuine interest in our client’s needs and the work itself. People who feel valued, are passionate about their projects and enjoy working with their colleagues are much more likely to produce outstanding results. This commitment to doing great work is reflected in our firm’s values and dedication to delivering great service. Working with people who share my enthusiasm, is the thing that I find most satisfying in my day-to-day role. It makes me want to be a better professional mentor. I like to think that I learn as much from my people as they do from me.

In summary, a positive culture in professional services firms—marked by mutual respect, a sense of decency, and a shared commitment to quality—creates a thriving work environment that benefits our clients and our people.

An atmosphere like this not only enhances service delivery and client relationships, but also ensures sustainable growth and success.
